The stock Nexus 7 (2012) speakers were pretty terrible, the second generation tablet, the Nexus 7 (2013) did improve things but your still not going to get the same output when compared to a decent set of speakers.
If you are looking for greater volume or higher quality then a secondary set of speakers or headphones will make for a sensible purchase.

You’ve got a couple of options here, you might go for the traditional plug in portable speakers, they’ll just connect via the 3.5mm headphone jack and away you go.
Many speakers are sold as being iPod compatible, you can use these as long as they feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, you don’t want to buy speakers with an iPod docking system, these won’t work.
If you need an extra boost look for some powered amplified speakers, these will probably need batteries or will be mains powered but on the plus side they’ll give you extra volume.
Alternatively, this tablet has Bluetooth connectivity so you will be able to connect wirelessly. Here are some example of external Nexus 7 bluetooth speakers.
